Are Computers Addictive?
I had a conversation that other day with a local
psychotherapist where the focus wound up being around technology
in general, and computers in specific. This woman said to me that
she had heard that besides hypnosis and NLP, that I was heavily
into the world of computing. I affirmed her knowledge and said I
have been interested in computers for over twenty years now.
She then looked at me, and in all earnestness said "Tell
me, how do you reconcile that?" Talk about ambiguity! I
said, "Reconcile what!?!"
She said, "You know, computers and the healing arts. They
contradict one another fully. The healing arts are designed to
help people, and computers are a highly addictive source of
instant gratification, and we all know how destructive it can be
for people to be addicted to anything. How can you say that you
care about people when you are also helping to ruin their lives
by promoting a technological lifestyle that is centered around
instant gratification?"
I looked at her, and said, "I would like to continue this
conversation with you, but it would have to be another time. I
really must go now, there are three people that I know who have
yet to become intimately familiar with the word of computing, and
I first have to go and get them hooked. Besides, I disagree with
you. I know for sure I am not even remotely addicted to any
technology, especially computers."
All kidding aside, I really gave some thought to what that
women said to me, but it was nonsense! I'm not addicted!! Well,
time for me to go, I NEED to order another 32 Meg of EDO Ram, a
two Meg Vram upgrade for my 3D video card, and one more 2 Gig
hard drive. Can't wait for Microsoft to release the DirectX(r)
drivers suite. Oh yeah! Lest I forget, I NEED to get a 21"
Monitor, my 17" just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. This
mail order really sucks, I have to wait a whole 12 hours for the
parts to be delivered. Tap Tap, pace pace -- there's got to be a
way to get this stuff to me faster. That woman is crazy -- there
just isn't any truth to what she is saying.
