Editor's Note: In response to a post in which a person characterized themselves as a "thinker" personality who always moved slowly and never got emotional or excited. With the emphasis on NEVER!
More on Flexibility
Are you this way even when engaged in deeply intimate sexual contact?
Or is it possible. . . .just maybe. . . . you never really
know. . .I mean, what if you were to gauge your personality type
on a context by context basis? I think it would be more than a
little possible that you would find that you responded
differently in different contexts. I can see it now. Your house
is on fire, and you have guests staying over. But since you
prefer written over verbal communication, would you really
consider writing your guests a note? Or maybe you would forgo the
note. And, using a steady monotone voice, while moving along
slowly without exhibiting any unnecessary facial expression, you
say to your guests ......................... the
......................... house ......................... is
......................... on ......................... fire
......................... and ......................... we
......................... need ......................... to
......................... get ......................... out
......................... of ......................... here.
I don't think so!!! And, it might be useful to throw out the
notion of personality type and simply build in whatever you want
to build in. Of course, it would also be useful to respect
context while you are building. This way you can have any type of
behavior that you need for any given context.
It really never ceases to amaze me the level at which some
people buy into the notion that they are robots and not human
beings. And not just human beings - but creative, flexible,
capable creatures that can, and have, throughout all history,
found ways to surpass what they had done the day before. Think
about it. Are you really this person.....ALWAYS? And do you not
remember that you do have a choice? Gee. I wonder what would
happen if you held constant, not who you think you are, but the
way in which you go about creating your representation of self.
But only this time, as you begin thinking about how you think
about who you are, you automatically slip into that way of
thinking of some other personality type. Even one that you made
up from scratch.
Bye
