A Change Metaphor
Hello Quent,
I realize that you have been thinking about making an
important change. Yet, you have made a past decision to behave in
the way that you do now in that context. I too have done the
same. Where I have realized that a behavior that I had chosen for
myself no longer fit. Yet, I had developed a habit. Even though
the behavior no longer fit, I had found myself doing it time and
time again. Its like trying to wear the same clothes you wore
when you were five, or eight, or even ten? Those old clothes no
longer fit, now do they?
BTW, Ever watch the Discovery Channel? How about the Learning
Channel? These are two channels that I enjoy. Oftentimes there
will be something that I want to watch on both of these channels
at the same time. At first I learned how to switch back and forth
between the two. I would watch this one for a few minutes and
then the next. But in doing it that way I always missed some
important part of each show. Finally I solved the whole thing, I
bought a VCR. I get it all and I don't even have to be there, I
trust that my VCR knows how to do what I programmed it to do.
This way I can always watch it later.
It's kinda like - your unconscious - in several ways. First
there is the archive, all of those resources you have stored for
later use. Secondly, you don't have to have a comprehensive
understanding of how it works in order to use it. And finally,
there is the ability to edit any of that saved information. I
always edit out the commercials that I don't like.
Ever get to know your unconscious? Because in getting to know
your unconscious you have to go there. But when you do go there
you are no longer here. I guess you could always record what is
happening here while you are there, so that you can later watch
how you were able to make the changes that you made while you are
there.
One of the most important things I tell people, is about the
future. That up until now they have done many things. Interesting
things, funny things, things that they will never do again. We
all have a past that we have experienced. But we haven't yet
experienced the future. After all, if we did then it would be in
the past, and it would be a very different past at that. Because
what was in the future before is in the past. And, what was in
the past is even further in the past. It's difficult to
understand consciously. Yet if you think about it, at one time
you crawled. And before could learn how to walk, let alone run,
you had make many different adjustments. Adjustment to the way
you thought about things, felt about things. Adjustment in your
physiology, your relationship to gravity. You had to change,
almost completely, the relationship between your vestibular
system and your visual cortex, your auditory cortex, your
kinesthetic cortex.
The interesting thing about change is - that we can't not
change. Life is about change. At one time I was into roller
skating, I became really good at it. But one day, and I am not
really sure when, but something changed. And it changed suddenly.
I was no longer interested in roller skating. I had moved onto
other interests. I found out about sports cars. And for some time
I was really into sports cars - until. You see, as we go through
life our preferences change, and with them our behaviors, the
things we believe, even our identity shifts and changes as we
mature.
Sure, there were times when I wanted to go back. One time I
strapped on a pair of roller skates. And although it was fun for
a couple of minutes, it just wasn't the same. The same with
sports cars. Just like the clothes I wore when I was five, or
eight, or even ten. I guess that is why they call it the past.
After all, how many times can you watch the same movie, over and
over again? I have all of those video tapes of the Discovery and
Learning channels. For me, they are only good for sharing with
other people. But how many times can you share them with the same
people? You would always be having to make new friends just so
you could share those old repeats!
I have actually met people like that. All they want to do is
talk about what they have already done. Me, what's done is done.
Sure there might be some value in it. But to live it over and
over? No way! I want to discuss, with the friends that I cherish,
what the future holds. What can we do next? What can we create?
What have we yet to experience? To enjoy? At one time I only
listened to only one kind of music. But then I decided to try
another, and another. The same with movies. I liked a particular
type of movie. But now I find that I am interested in all kinds
of movies. Dramas, action, foreign film, mysteries, comedies,
thrillers, and at times, even erotic thrillers.
Be well my friend
